The moon salutation is a lovely sequence to learn to start your own home yoga practice. It takes the body through a really nice range of motion, particularly the hips and shoulders. It ca be practised at any time but is particularly lovely in the evening, at full or new moon or in the winter months to keep the body feeling flexible.

The more you pay attention to your breath and how the postures feel for you, the more it becomes a moving meditation.

The sun salutation sequence is modified so it can either be performed sitting on or leaning on a chair. This can make the sequence more accessible if for example your balance, mobility, flexibility or strength make the traditional standing sequence challenging for you. It is also beneficial for those who are able to perform the traditional sequence to try the chair modifications and feel the difference. Using the chair as a prop is a really lovely way to release tension in tight shoulders or give the wrists a rest. Focus on the breath and awareness of how the postures feel helps to make the sequence become a moving meditation.
Before approaching physical yoga postures it’s good to think about how to view them. By seeing them firstly as a tool to hook or settle our minds, we can be kinder to ourselves in selecting the most appropriate version of the posture for our individual bodies and physical capabilities, without reference to how someone else looks in a posture.
