Like ripples in a pool of water your, thoughts magnify and amplify, for better or worse. So starting to influence the way your mind naturally gravitates, can have a real impact on your mental well-being.
To help your mind to perform at its best, it's useful to train it, just like you would a muscle; helping it to learn to work in a way which keeps you feeling good for more of the time. The first step to achieving this is developing awareness, of what your mind is focusing on and how it makes you feel.
Once you are in the habit of ‘checking in’, and are aware of what your mind is focusing on/how you are feeling – it may be helpful to adjust your perspective, or ‘reframe’ your thoughts. Trying to shift they way you are looking at a situation but can be challenging, but with practice you can learn to view things in a more productive light.
One of the most useful and globally recognised techniques for shifting how you feel about a situation, is the practice of gratitude. When something has got you stuck in a mental rut, the ability to find something that is working or that you are grateful for, can have a massive impact on your train of thought, how you're feeling, and allow you to see things differently. This can require determination and practice, but if you can find just one thing to be grateful for, that you had maybe overlooked, you are one step closer to feeling in a better place.
Use of positive language can also influence your mindset enormously. The saying goes, ‘What you think about and speak about you bring about’. What messages do your thoughts and words send to your subconscious and are you happy with what your self-talk is feeding you?
Choosing what you allow your mind to take in and absorb, also impacts your mental state. You start to become a reflection of your environment – the people you spend time with, the books you read, music you listen to, tv, movies and you tube videos you watch, as well as your social media usage, all influence your thinking and therefore your mood. If you've ever heard the computer science concept ‘rubbish in, rubbish out’, you'll know it relates to nonsense input data producing nonsense output. If you apply that to your mind, it's worth making sure you are taking steps to nourish your mind with what you allow to seep in.
